MIDDAY SUPERVISOR TRAINING

Professional Development Board for Physical Education

Midday Supervisor Training:

The following training sessions can be delivered to schools or clusters of schools on an individually commissioned basis.  They can be delivered during a morning or afternoon session on a normal school day, or as part of a whole school training day. The duration of each course is normally between two and three hours dependent on the commissioning school.

Positive Lunchtimes

This course has been designed to meet the needs of those Midday Supervisors who have a responsibility for organising play activities and supervising primary aged children at lunchtimes.  During this course we will focus on typical roles and responsibilities and explore ways through which schools can help raise the profile of Midday Supervisors as leaders of positive lunchtimes.  Delegates will be introduced to a range of strategies and fun, practical activities that could be used to encourage more positive playtimes/ lunchtimes.  Delegates are asked to come suitably dressed for some gentle activities.  This course would suit TAs and support staff who also undertake this role.

Improving Wet Lunchtimes

This course has been designed to meet the needs of those Midday Supervisors who have a responsibility for organising play activities and supervising primary aged children during wet lunchtimes.  The course will be part theory, part practical and will engage delegates in a wide range of activities suitable for indoor spaces/classrooms.  We will explore ways in which to organise the space and manage the available resources effectively so that wet lunchtimes run more smoothly!  Delegates are asked to come suitably dressed for some gentle activity.  This course would suit TAs and support staff who also undertake this role.

Managing Behaviour in the Playground

This course will focus on how adults can manage children’s behaviour during playtime / lunchtime sessions through the use of assertive behaviour and language strategies. We will identify ways in which mid-day supervisors can develop good relationships with pupils in order to help them gain and keep control whilst on the playground. Delegates will be introduced to a number of games designed to encourage cooperation, sharing and teamwork for use with pupils, to create a more positive playground environment for everyone. This course would suit TAs and support staff who also undertake this role.

Developing Pupils as Playground Leaders

An increasing number of primary schools are developing their young people as leaders within a range of different contexts.  This course focuses on strategies and processes that can be used to identify, recruit, train and retain pupils as young leaders for playground / lunchtime activities.  This course would suit TAs and support staff who also undertake the lunchtime supervisory role.
